- Located at the northernmost edge of Muju, Sanuishil Village lies near the three-province border with Chungcheongnam-do and Chungcheongbuk-do. Every first lunar month, residents continue the traditional village rituals of Sanje and the Sotdae Rite (also called the Jimdae Rite), praying for peace and a bountiful harvest. In this region, the sotdae is called a “jimdae” and carries the meaning of a protective village ritual that wards off misfortune and welcomes good fortune.
At the top of a pole about 7 meters high is a crow figure symbolizing a guardian spirit that protects the village. Skeins of thread and dried pollack are tied to the pole as offerings, symbolizing a connection between the divine and the human world and a prayer for protection from misfortune.
The village ritual was briefly discontinued in the 1970s but was revived by local residents in 1981 and has continued ever since, preserving the community’s traditional culture. Today’s Sotdae Rite includes the selection of ritual officiants, raising the sotdae, ceremonial rites, nongak performances, and a community celebration, making it a representative cultural event that carries on the beliefs and communal spirit of Sanuishil Village.
