  • Description
  • Anseong Nakhwa-nori, also called Julbul-nori (“string fire performance”), is a traditional Korean fire show where sparks scatter in the wind like falling flower petals. It originated in Dumun Village (Geumpyeong-ri, Anseong-myeon, Muju County), and is performed by hanging nakhwa sticks made of mulberry charcoal powder, salt and dried mugwort on long strings and setting them on fire. As the sticks burn, the blooming sparks, crackling sound of the charcoal, and the subtle scent of mugwort create a poetic atmosphere. Traditionally performed during festive occasions such as Buddha’s Birthday and before rice planting, the contemporary version lights 3,000 nakhwa sticks (370 per rope) simultaneously from both sides of the Namdaecheon River, forming a spectacular cascade of sparks.
